Contemporary Prints - Tips

As thisisperfect gives you the freedom to create the perfect piece of canvas art to match your surroundings, do not be afraid to experiment - remember you can change your combinations of colours and formats as many times as you like.

What do you want to colour-match to?

Use elements from around you. Pick a few different combinations,
for example:

  • Floor colour + sofa colour + favourite ornament
  • Plain white + the colour of a rug + the green of a nearby plant
  • Take the wall colour and add 2 different darker or lighter shades
  • Take two neutral shades and add your favourite bright colour

Don't forget you can try the same combination of colours in a different order- try swapping your colours round using the swap round button swap round button to see which works best for you.

Any contemporary canvas can be split into two or even three for a stunning "series" effect - try this out in the size and shape section.

Using combinations of similar shades will create a harmonious, calming feel to your contemporary print

...whilst using contrasting or bright colours will give a bold and striking look to your contemporary print - try both!

One of the most effective colour combinations comes from using a base of subtle colour or colours that will harmonise with your surroundings and a second or third colour that will introduce a striking highlight.

To achieve a very subtle look, try using three colours from the same column or row of the colour-match palette such as 10 - 40 - 60 or 74 - 75 - 76.

Try not to get too hung up on exact colour matches – the human eye can detect millions of different colours and we have just 100! We have tried to ensure that we have colours representing most “families” of colour that will compliment most decorative colour-schemes. The emphasis of colour within your art can be altered completely by swapping and changing the dominant colour until you get the right balance and the overlaying of colours can produce a miriad of colours that you do not see in the palette (try this, for instance with “Shoreline”)

Some pieces of art, are designed specifically with the thought that they will look the most impressive if split into two or three separate canvases, so don’t forget to try this out when you click “next” after choosing colours – the effects can be stunning! Remember that some of these work better split in Portrait format rather than Landscape format (of course all canvasses can be hung any way you like when you receive them – you decide!)

The hardest thing is to make a decision – so make sure you save all the pieces that you create into your own private gallery (there is no limit to the numbers of pieces of art you can save). It is far easier to see three or four canvases lined up in a row and to decide which one you like most than to try and remember what each one looked like. Just click on the “Save to Gallery” button after you have made your format choices, enter your details and your art will always be there every time you return to www.thisisperfect.co.uk

Have fun - everyone is an artist!
