Stolen Brazilian paintings recovered

Published on: 09-Jan-2008
Two paintings stolen three weeks ago from Brazil's most valuable art collection have been recovered.

The paintings, Portrait of Suzanne Bloche by Picasso and the Coffee Worker, by Brazil's Candido Portinari, were taken from Sao Paulo's Museum of Art in a daring raid in which robbers used only a crowbar and some other small tools to break in.

Apparently none of the four guards on duty saw or heard anything.

Estimates of value for both pictures hover around the $55 million mark.

Eduardo Cosomano, a spokesman for the museum, said: "We confirmed the paintings are original and they are in perfect condition."

Police confirmed that the pictures were discovered in a metropolitan area of Sao Paulo known as Ferraz de Vasconcelos.

Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the robbery.
