New take on Last Supper

Published on: 09-Jan-2008
A new take on Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece, the Last Supper, has caused a stir in Cornwall.

The new version by artist Nicholas St John Rosse, who took 18 months to complete the work, depicts a church congregation in contemporary clothes in place of Christ and his disciples.

It was commissioned and put on display by St Paul's Roman Catholic Church in Tintagel.

Mr Rosse told the Press Assocation that he wanted a "modern take" on the original, which was completed in 1498.

The picture has generated some heated opinions among the locals about how 'modern' it is.

One reader wrote in to The Herald newspaper to say that the artist "had simply updated the clothing of 12 men and given the impression that there are no women in St Paul's parish".

He argued that it could not be that modern if it exclusively portrayed men.

It would appear then that it is just a case of 'see if you can see yourself in the picture' for the locals.

No problem for the artist's sons as they are in it.
