A Miro painting has fetched €11.6 million at auction - a record for one of his works.

The work entitled Blue Star by the renowned Spanish artist had been expected to sell for between €5 million and €7 million.

Auctioneers Drouot in Paris sold the 1927 painting as part of an auction of ten works which included pieces by Picasso, and Laurens.

The combined total of the sale amounted to €21.8 million .

Another Miro work, Bird, sold for €6.2 million and a Gris oil painting, The Guitar Player, fetched €2.17 million.

The artworks were kept in a vault for 40 years.

They were from the collection of Andre Lefevre, a banker and art patron of the first half of the 20th century.

European collectors, according to Drouot, bought all the paintings.

During the 1960, some 270 works of art from the same collection were auctioned off in Paris, capturing the imagination of the public at the time.

Lefevre's relatives had retained the last ten works until now.
