Italy to display reclaimed art

Published on: 18-Dec-2007
Ancient works of art will go on display in Rome later this week after the authorities successfully reclaimed them.

The Italian government has spent years lobbying for the return of the 68 works that were either stolen or illegally exported to the US.

A number had found their way into prestigious museums across the Atlantic.

The collection includes pottery, sculptures and paintings from the Roman, Greek and Etruscan empires.

They were returned to Italy after a deal was struck with the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Metropolitan Museum in New York and Princeton University Art Museum.

The exhibition at the Quirinal Palace in Rome opens on Friday.

Organisers are still awaiting the Euphronius Krater, a 2,500 year-old vase, which will be returned by the New York's Metropolitan Museum early next year.
