Art highlights plight of children

Published on: 18-Dec-2007
An American freelance photographer has won Unicef's photograph of the year.

Stephanie Sinclair captured the image of a 40-year-old Afghan man and his 11-year-old bride on their wedding day.

Unicef said the photograph highlighted the plight of the millions of young girls around the world who were married-off underage.

Sinclair picked up the Unicef Photo of the Year 2007 award at a ceremony in Berlin yesterday.

Second place went to a German photographer who shot a small boy in Bangladesh carrying bricks on his head.

In third was the image of a little girl celebrating her birthday by jumping up and down on an abandoned sofa in the Manila tip where she lives.

The Unicef award is designed to draw attention to the UN organisation's efforts to protect children from abuse, neglect and exploitation.
