Matchstick-man painter LS Lowry's depiction of Blackpool pleasure beach has been sold for £1.4 million.

The picture entitled The Fairground was produced by the iconic artist in 1938.

It was auctioned by Sotheby's to a private collector and the work is expected to remain in the UK.

A spokesman for the auctioneers said: "In choosing to record the scene, he has provided not only a fascinating record of Blackpool Pleasure Beach in the 1930s, but also an intriguing insight into how little has changed."

A Lowry coming on to the market is a rarity and the auctioned work sparked a bidding war between several collectors with the eventual buyer wishing to remain anonymous.

Lowry is known for his depictions of life in the industrial heartlands of northern England during the early 20th century.

His distinctive style often showed up in landscapes peopled with 'matchstick men' looking human figures.

He has a permanent display of work on exhibition at The Lowry art gallery on Salford Quays.
