Spencer paints stadium

Renowned English contemporary artist Liam Spencer has been asked to paint a picture of a football stadium.

Football website Uefa.com reports the football-loving painter was asked to produce the painting of Manchester City's ground, as part of a 'visual identity' package for the 2008 Uefa Cup final to be played there.

The opportunity gave Spencer the chance to indulge his twin loves - art and football.

He told Uefa.com: "I don't think that this kind of crossover of football and art happens very often, so it's quite nice to bring the two together.

"Normally I choose my own subject and work at my own pace…but I've seen the stadium and liked it and this gave me the incentive."

Spencer, born in Burnley, went on to say that the industrial landscape, on which he based many of his works, had inspired him

He is also known for his depictions of urban landscapes, focussing on rainy scenes.

"You can't escape the rain in that part of England," he said, so you "might as well make the most of it".
