Holy land gets banksy treatment

Published on: 03-Dec-2007
Notoriously illusive graffiti artist Banksy has been plying his trade in the holy land.

He has reportedly been painting murals on the security wall put up by the Israelis in Bethlehem to keep out the Palestinians.

Six images have been spotted on the wall including one of a soldier being frisked by a pig-tailed girl.

Pictures done in the 'guerrilla' artist's trademark stencil style have appeared at the same time as an exhibition entitled Santa's Ghetto opens to the public in Bethlehem, where they can purchase works by Banksy and other painters.

It is intended to attract people to the area to see the situation there at first hand and to show them that it is not as dangerous as it is perceived.

As Banksy said to The Times, via a text message: "It would do good if more people came to see the situation here for themselves.

"If it is safe enough for a bunch of sissy artists then it’s safe enough for anyone.”

Banksy is rarely out of the news and Lambeth council has recently bowed to public pressure.

The local authority recently decided to overturn a previous decision to erase his stencils from council property.
