Interior decorators urged to check insurance

Amateur interior decorators have been urged to check with their insurance companies before embarking on any major projects. With the housing market stalling or even beginning to fall back, many homeowners might be tempted to do up their existing property.
The plethora of home improvement programmes on television and a less appealing mortgage market have made more people consider new ways to add value to their houses.
Converting a loft or basement is one way to make a home more valuable, but failing to inform the insurer could be a costly oversight.
"Your house insurance is based on the value of your property, on the rebuild costs," said Alan Tovey, director of the Basement Information Centre.
"If you extend your house, whether it's a basement or anything, you're likely to find that your premium will increase."
Mr Tovey went on to say that it was important any companies or individuals working on the property had the necessary insurance cover.
Renovating a basement or loft can involve quite significant work, which could damage the property if it is not done properly.
