New talent on show

A long-standing prestigious exhibition is to showcase the work of a group of talented young artists.

The show, Bloomberg New Contemporaries, first held in 1949, has a reputation for kick starting the careers of new and innovative stars of the art world such as Damien Hirst and David Hockney.

This year's exhibition, being held at the Cornerhouse in Manchester, features a wide selection of work by the 37 up-and-coming artists, selected from an initial group of 1,200 entries.

It is open to all fine art students throughout the UK.

The successful ones were picked by a panel without any information about what art school the applicants attended, ages or gender.

Exhibition co-ordinator Bev Bytheway, told the Manchester Evening News: "It will take four or five years for these artists to establish their voices, but there's so much promise."

Alongside the main show artist David Williams is displaying a series of potentially controversial drawings.

He told the paper that the subject matter would "insult people because it was dealing with morals".

One of Damien Hirst's first claims to fame was his creation of a bisected cow and calf.
