Movie smoothie Hugh Grant has raked in over £10 million after auctioning a painting. The portrait of Elizabeth Taylor by acclaimed pop-artist Andy Warhol did not realise pre-auction estimates, though still gave Grant a healthy profit on his original outlay of $3.6 million.
Taylor's portrait, auctioned by Christie's in New York, was one of over ten done by Warhol in 1962 while she was convalescing after an illness.
The artist created the images during a period in which he also painted portraits of movie star Marilyn Monroe and US president's wife Jackie Kennedy.
Grant is expected to reinvest his windfall by purchasing the works of new up and coming artists.
Amy Cappellazzo, from Christie's, told Marie Claire magazine: "The seller of the Liz is taking advantage of the strength of today's market and turning his attention to work by younger artists."
The new owner of the portrait is an unknown telephone bidder
