Home interiors neglected

Published on: 06-Nov-2007
Home interiors are being neglected as a result of homeowners struggling to pay sky-high property prices and mortgages.

A survey by home insurer MORE TH>N has revealed that 60 per cent of new homeowners view 'finishing touches' to a home, such as pictures, as something they were struggling to find money for.

Only 35 per cent do the basics like painting the walls with, on average, Brits spending only £972 a year on furnishings.

The findings also show 51 per cent of Britons agreeing with the view that identikit housing developments lack character.

In addition, 48 per cent believe TV makeover shows account for the 'one style fits all' approach to decorating and furnishing which is contributing to the soulless feel of some properties.

Mike Holliday-Williams, managing director of MORE TH>N, said: "Britain was once the place of cosy country cottages and quirky towns and cities.

"However, due to a housing shortage we are witnessing a new generation of development, where houses are increasingly standardised both inside and out."

This, he went on to say, results in unique properties becoming dearer and new owners needing to fork out more to personalise homes.
