Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (mima) has received a windfall of £1 million. The Art Fund - the UK's foremost art charity - handed over the money as part of its initiative to promote far-reaching changes in the level and aspiration of contemporary art collections in this country.
Given to mima in collaboration with The Drawing Centre, New York, the grant was one of five given to partnerships with the aim of securing outstanding work by artists, who are either potentially or presently significant.
David Barrie, director of The Art Fund, said: "We were stunned by the amazing response to the initiative, particularly by the enthusiasm and ideas generated by the museums working in partnership with contemporary art organisations.
"The vision and ability of the five winners was particularly impressive - now comes the exciting task of acquiring and commissioning work to make their ideas a reality."
The Art Fund, which is completely funded by public donations, offers grants enabling UK institutions to expand collections and promotions.
Since 1903, it has enabled secure 860,000 works of art.
