Valuable painting found in old sofa bed

Published on: 01-Nov-2007
A German student is celebrating after selling a valuable painting she discovered concealed in the fabric of a moth-eaten sofa bed.

The student is expected to make €16,000 from the sale after the picture raised €19,200 - a healthy return considering the student from Berlin bought the bed for only €150 in a flea market.

Spokeswoman for Hamburg auctioneers, Ketterer Kunst, said: "She used the sofa bed for a while before realizing the painting was in there."

Ms Kunst went on to add that the student had "no idea how the oil painting had got inside the bed".

The painting titled "Preparations for the flight to Egypt" was painted between 1605 and 1610, according to art experts.

Although the artist is not known it is believed he had connections to Venetian painter Carlo Saraceni.
