Banksy caught red-handed

Published on: 31-Oct-2007
The world's most famous street artist was photographed yesterday by a passer-by while at work in East London.

Working in his new piece of art, Banksy extended double yellow lines from the street onto the wall of a house to draw a bright yellow flower, under which sits a bored looking council worker.

The anonymous artist's work can be seen on walls all across London and everywhere around the world.

The news come as Tower Hamlets Council announced its decision to ban all graffiti and treat Banksy's artwork as vandalism.

Councillor Abdul Ullah said: "Whilst some graffiti is considered to be art, we know that many of our residents think graffiti in areas where they live, such as local housing estates, is an eyesore."

The graffiti artist's real name is thought to be either Robert Banks or Robin Banks. He is thought to have been born in Bristol in 1974.

Banksy's artwork is admired by Hollywood actors such as Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, who spent more than £1 million at a sale at Lazarides gallery in Soho this month.

The guerrilla artist's success is highly ironic as his work is admired by people he aims to satirise.
