The Tube makes an exhibition of itself

Published on: 30-Oct-2007
An exhibition celebrating the exploits of iconic 80s TV show, The Tube is being held.

The Red Box Gallery in Newcastle is putting together the show to highlight the effect the programme had on the region.

The programme, originally presented by the late Paula Yates and Jools Holland, was an anarchic mix of celebrity chat and music.

It also acted as a launch-pad for many, now well-known, musicians and comedians.

Talking to the Northern Echo newspaper, Red Box design group chairman, Alan Smith, said: "The Tube put Tyneside on the map for many viewers.

"As a Newcastle gallery our aim is to reflect the significance the show had for the area."

It is difficult to imagine now, given the antics employed by such 90s presenters as Chris Evans and the expletives peppering mainstream shows like 'Friday Night With Jonathan Ross', quite how radical The Tube was.
