Fountain turned into artwork

Published on: 22-Oct-2007
Rome's famous Trevi Fountain had its water turned blood red by an unknown 'artist' hoping to make a mark.

The stunt was pulled off by a man who tipped a bucket of red dye into the Roman landmark after leaving a series of leaflets around the fountain urging members of the public.

Police from the Italian capital are believed to be on the trail of the man and think he could be part of Italian Futurist art movement, the Telegraph reports.

The authorities are believed to be unimpressed by the stunt which could have caused lasting damage to the 18th century monument.

Silvio Di Francia, city councilman for culture, said: "We are obviously in a city full of tourists so the gesture of an agitator is always a potential problem."

Actress Anita Ekberg, who jumped into the fountain in the movie La Dolce Vita, told the Telegraph that the incident was "a deplorable act of vandalism, and an offence against Rome".
