Missing Madonna artwork found

A painting featuring Madonna and a childhood Christ has been re-discovered after disappearing during the second world war.

The Swansea painting, by Sassoferrato, was completely destroyed during the blitz but technical wizards have resurrected the painting.

Using old images and photographs of the painting a photography wizard has been able to recreate full colour replica of the print, which is now hanging back in its home at St Mary's Church, the BBC reports.

Brian Gaylor, the photography tutor who brought the image back from the dead, told the broadcaster: "We started off with a black and white, very poor quality photograph, taken around 1890."

He added: "Over a period of time - 30 to 40 hours - I was able to build the image from the three different sources."

Mr Gaylor continued: "It was a difficult job but it looked very good in the end. The church was delighted."
