An artwork by JMW Turner, lost for more than a century, will finally go back on public display. The watercolour painting, called Bamborough Castle, has not been on display to the public for 118 years after it was bought at auction in 1872.
The piece is said to be one of Turner's finest works, with his contemporaries proclaiming it as one of the world's greatest, the Independent reports.
Commenting on the historical significance of the piece, Henry Wemyss, head of British watercolours at Sotheby's, told the publication: "Transferring oneself back to the day it was produced, it genuinely excited and frightened people.
"There was an immense emotional response to the watercolour. Nowadays, we respond much more technically and we can understand how watercolours were produced."
He added: "But with this work, you find it difficult to see how he achieved it because he was using a range of different techniques."
The piece is set to go under the hammer at the auction house on December 5th with early estimates valuing the painting at £2.5 million
