Private artworks set to go on display

Published on: 17-Oct-2007
A number of masterpieces which make up one of the most extraordinary private collections ever assembled are set to go on show at the Royal Academy.

The show marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Paul Mellon, the collector of the pieces which include works by Joshua Reynolds, George Stubbs and JMW Turner, the Evening Standard reports.

Commenting on the exhibition, which will include more than 150 works, John Baskett, personal friend of Mr Mellon, told the publication: "It's a very limited space in the Royal Academy. It's an exhibition you could easily have done six times over.

"I'm sure there are people who have hardly heard of him but he gave very substantial sums to British institutions."

He added: "He gave to the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge and to the Royal Academy and he was very generous to the Royal Veterinary College in Camden."

The exhibition is set to open on the October 20th and will run until January 27th.
