Pop artist poised for National Portrait Gallery

Peter Gidal, a modern pop artist inspired by the work of Andy Warhol, will have his video artwork displayed at the National Portrait Gallery.

Gidal was so inspired by the artist's Screen Tests piece, a series of short films featuring celebrities, that he made his own version called Heads - both of which will be on display at the gallery.

Warhol's originals sparked controversy as the three-minute pieces feature the famous faces doing very little, something which Gidal was keen not to stray from, the Independent reports.

The artist told the publication: "I wanted to show that they may be stars but when you look at their faces, they become just another face. It was an attempt at equalisation."

Attempting to differ his work form Warhol's, he added: "I wanted my camera to be a complete authoritarian imposition,"

Gidal's work, which features Francis Bacon, Pete Townshend and Marianne Faithfull goes on display from October 11th and runs until January 20th.
