Monet artwork damaged by vandals

Published on: 08-Oct-2007
A group of youths have broken into an art museum and punched a hole through a canvas art masterpiece by Claude Monet.

The work, Le Pont d'Argenteuil, has a huge hole in the middle after the vandals found their way into the Orsay Museum, situated on Paris's Left Bank.

Commenting on the act of destruction, Christine Albanel, culture minister, said: "It's always a heartbreak when an art object that is our memory, our heritage, that we love and that we are proud of is victim of a purely criminal act."

She continued: "We know there were four or five people, likely four boys and a girl, who entered around midnight to one am, broke a door that was, perhaps, fragile."

The artwork, which is more than 130 years old, features a view of the River Seine and includes a bridge and some boats.

It is hoped that the masterpiece can be restored.
