A canvas painting of legendary U2 front man Bono has been sold for more than £1,700 at auction.

The painting, based on a photograph of the rocker receiving a knighthood, by artist David Nolan reached the lower limits of its guide price and sold for £1,733.

Commenting on the sale, a spokesman for James Adam, the auction house which sold the painting said: "An anonymous bidder in the sale room purchased the painting after some early brisk bidding."

Nolan, who was born in Dublin, is also famous for his portrait of Democratic Unionist Party leader Ian Paisley.

Meanwhile, an arthouse in Hollywood is hosting an exhibition displaying more than 50 pieces inspired by Britney Spears.

The show, called 'Just Britney' will show a number of works that either champion or trash the controversial pop princess.

Commenting on the exhibition, curator Steven Corfe said: "We reached out to a number of artists and found Britney is such a polarising figure these days."
