Budding artists battle for cash prize

Promising young artists from Goole are battling it out for a share of £2,500.

The 'Art in the Community' competition, organised by local firm Drax Power, will allow young artists from almost thirty regional schools to submit their artwork for approval.

The competition will be open for children from the ages of five to 18, across four categories, and is aiming to promote an appreciation for art in the area, the Goole Howden Courier reports.

Dorothy Thompson, chief executive of Drax Power told the publication: "We believe 'Art in the Community' will be a practical and rewarding exercise through which we can recognise and support the activities of schools in helping young people express themselves in art."

Meanwhile in Bolton, the Youth Work 4 Health programme is giving a group of teenagers the chance to depict their adolescent experiences on canvas.

The youngsters' artwork are expected to explore the themes of sex, drugs and street violence.
