Iraq artwork could spark outrage
Published on: 24-Sep-2007
British painter Gerald Laing is set for a backlash, following the decision to exhibit his controversial artwork depicting themes from the Iraq war.The 71-year-old pop artist has created a series of works which reflect upon the torture that occurred within the walls of the Abu Ghraib prison.
The pieces feature the infamous Lynndie England and her boyfriend Charles Graner who photographed the abuse and misery they inflicted upon the inmates.
Other works are more critical of the officials. Truth Or Consequence is a scathing attack on the foreign policy of former UK prime minister Tony Blair.
And his politically motivated paintings also include pieces on the Cuban missile crisis of the early 1960's and the assassination of John F Kennedy.
The works will be displayed from the September 28th at the StolenSpace show at the Old Truman Brewery on Brick Lane in east London.
