Holocaust survivor honoured with contemporary art
Published on: 21-Sep-2007
The recent death of a revered holocaust survivor has moved a Leeds artist to mark her extraordinary life with an exhibition.Helena 'Ilona' Kennedy, a prisoner of the Auschwitz concentration camp in the 1940's, befriended the artist Hilary Curwen and became instantly intrigued by her work.
So after her death last year, Ms Curwen felt that an exhibition was the best way to commemorate her friend, the Jewish Telegraph Online reports.
She told the publication: "I felt a profound sense of loss at Helena's death, and missed visiting her.
"I had this strong urge to do something about her and started to think about ideas which would express my feelings.
"Despite all the blackness her love of life, truth, colour and beauty always shone through, and appealed to me as an artist."
The proceeds of the exhibition will go to the Holocaust Survivors Friendship Association, of which Helena was a member.
