Artwork exhibition called 'crap'

A new artwork exhibition in Walsall was branded 'crap' by a highly unimpressed member of the council.

The controversial display, which features a chandelier made from tampons, was slammed by Cllr Denis Anson, who urged the gallery to spend its money on more conventional pieces, the Walsall Advertiser reports.

Speaking his mind, the councillor told the publication: "It is just another example of what is shown at the art gallery and most of it is crap. Most councillors agree with me but won't say so."

He added: "The gallery costs the council £2 million a year, and we have to put on this rubbish to justify the £750,000 we get from the Arts Council, West Midlands."

But, gallery director Stephen Snoody defended the work and its acclaimed artist Joana Vasconcelos: "The New Art Gallery prides itself on the variety of work on display that caters for many different artistic preferences and is an asset to the region, he said.

"Joana Vasconcelos is an exciting international artist whose large scale sculptures are witty, intelligent and thought provoking, and we are delighted to present her only solo exhibition in the UK."
