Kemp-Welch finally gallery opens

Published on: 13-Sep-2007
A gallery in the honour of an exceptional painter who died almost 50 years ago has finally opened.

The Kemp-Welch gallery, which is dedicated to the works of Lucy Kemp-Welch, is now open to the public at its home in Bushey.

The paintings had been on display around 22 years ago but due to lack of funding they were placed in storage - the new gallery comes after two decades of campaigning by her fans.

Kemp-Welch is famous for inspirational works on canvas, based on the environment around her, in both watercolours and oil, the Enfield Independent reports.

Margaret Frobisher, her long-time companion, inherited her works upon her death and it was her wish that the gallery opened.

Bushey is regarded as the spiritual home of the painter who lived in the town until she was 19.

Meanwhile, a team of designers, including Henry Holland, are creating a series of wall art posters that the public can take away and keep.

The innovative artwork is part of a promotion for Seven Dials shopping venue.
