Contemporary art tribute to rock 'n' roll

Published on: 20-Aug-2007
The unique relationship between contemporary art and rock 'n' roll is to be celebrated in a dynamic new exhibition.

Sympathy for the Devil: Art and Rock 'n' Roll Since 1967 promises to be one of the most fascinating contemporary art exhibitions for some time, drawing on the inextricable links between cutting edge music and visual art.

Held at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the exhibition will include a number of memorable examples of canvas art, all of which are somehow linked to the music that has inspired generations of youths around the world.

"This exhibition is the most serious and comprehensive look at the intimate and inspired relationship between the visual arts and rock 'n' roll culture to date, charting their intersection through works of art, album covers, music videos, and other materials," the museum points out.

"The exhibition addresses the importance of specific cities such as London, New York, Los Angeles, and Cologne; rock 'n' roll's style, celebrity, and identity politics in art; the experience, energy, and sense of devotion rock music inspires; and the dual role that many individuals play in both the sonic and visual realms."

The canvas artwork on show will hopefully capture the very essence of the most groundbreaking popular music of the last 40 years, with references to the Rolling Stones, The Who and The Beatles, among others.
