Quirky contemporary art depiction of Kate Moss to be shown

Published on: 08-Aug-2007
A contemporary art piece by top modern artist Marc Quinn that depicts supermodel Kate Moss as a modern-day sphinx is set to go on sale later this year.

The three-metre high piece is an enlarged version of a piece Quinn made last year, and shows star model Moss in an extreme yoga position with her ankles and arms twisted to sit behind her ears.

The quirkily contemporary art, the full title of which is Myth (Sphinx), will go on display from September at the Beyond Limits sale of modern and contemporary sculpture at Chatsworth House, Derbyshire, reports the Guardian.

"She [Moss] is a contemporary version of the sphinx. A mystery," Quinn says. "There must be something about her that has clicked with the collective unconscious to make her so ubiquitous, so spirit-of-the-age."

In a recent poll conducted by Harper's Bazaar magazine, Moss was voted as one of the top ten icons that define 'Britishness' in the noughties - though she was joined on that list by the rather less cool 'chav' sense of style. The Queen was voted as the country's top living icon in the survey and mashed potato as the country's favourite food.
