Bright light ideas get ample rewards

A range of brilliantly innovative lighting ideas have been rewarded at the Lighting Association's annual Student Lighting Design Awards.Now in their 19th year, the winners of this year's bright brainwave awards were announced at the Draycote Hotel, in Thurlaston near Rugby.
From more than 500 entries, 17 finalists were on hand for the event, with Christina Valentine from Ravensbourne College of Design eventually being chosen as Student Designer of the Year for her fibre optic creation, entitled Form.
Ms Valentine won £1,500 for herself as well as a further £500 for her college. Second place and a £750 prize went to Oscar Akira Tang, of Nottingham Trent University, whose innovative idea for a floor light, made with plywood and aluminum, was justly acclaimed.
Naoko Kanehira, of Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College, meanwhile picked up the Energy Efficient Student Lighting Designer of the Year for her brilliant balloon light, made from PVC.
The winners exhibited their innovative light ideas at The Lighting Association's Annual Conference, and will also see their products on display at The Lighting Show 2008, at Birmingham's NEC next January.
