Wall art plan to give a glimpse on war

An intriguing collection of authentic artefacts from the Berlin Wall is set to form the cornerstone of a major new US art project aimed at taking a closer look at life during the Cold War.

The wall art pieces are being collected in various shipments by members of the Outdoor Arts Foundation, based in Tampa Bay, Florida.

Totalling some 130 diversely-decorated slabs, the group took in its first delivery of the historic wall art last week, and with a number of shipments still set to come, the Foundation eventually expects to amass the largest single collection of authentic wall pieces.

When their wall art collection is complete, the Foundation will run a series of exhibitions and events both locally and nationally and running over a number of years to demonstrate something of what life was like during the long period of partition.

"We've researched this project for a year and a half, and as far as we know, this is the largest private collection in the world," Jay Goulde, executive director of the foundation told the St Petersburg Times.

"This isn't just a bunch of concrete, this is history. It represents the Cold War, oppression and segregation.

"When it came down, it became the quintessential symbol of freedom and democracy."
