Unique art made from festival left-overs
Published on: 17-Jul-2007
Pieces of unique art - including mural pictures and furniture - have been made using the left-overs from a seaside town's shellfish festival. The unique art was created by Blott Kerr-Wilson as part of the Tain Festival, and she used thousands of finished-with mussel shells from festival visitors to create a series of works which spoke of both art and the environment.
The shell-encrusted works are collectively entitled The Clearances and will go on show in the town's Collegiate Church.
Explaining the reasoning behind her works, Ms Kerr-Wilson told the Ross-shire Journal that "today's society just throws materials away" and that "kids are not encouraged to use their imaginations as much as they used to do".
As well as her unique art creations, Ms Kerr-Wilson, originally from Wales but now living in France, has spent the last ten weeks living and working in the Tain area, running workshops and community groups to help celebrate local heritage as part of Highland 2007, Scotland's special year of events in and about the area.
