Cool canvas art scheme is big community success

A giant canvas art challenge has seen the creation of 11 massive new murals which have served to unite and excite the community of a Canadian town.Launched by the Huntsville Business Improvement Association, the town's 2007 mural festival asked 11 contemporary canvas artists to create reproductions of famous works by Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven, the early 20th century group who transformed Canadian art with their powerful portraits of the country's scenery and spirit, reports the Huntsville Forester.
Given just two weeks to complete their challenge, the more modern Canadian creative forces called on members of the community to aid their progress - with a recreation of one of Thomson's works to be placed outside Huntsville City Hall, calling on an incredible 1,037 different community contributors!
Robin Brushey, Huntsville Business Improvement Association's co-ordinator, was delighted by the canvas art collective, commenting: "It was absolutely fantastic. I think we were all overwhelmed by the success of the event.
"The comments from the public were very supportive and encouraging and we are hoping to organise another event like this in the future."
The 11 new canvas art murals will be placed in locations across the town, joining 11 previous similar works.
