Yorkshire wall art is latest to get whitewash treatment

Published on: 12-Jul-2007
The hard work of five Yorkshire artists in creating a wall art masterpiece as specified by a local businessman has come to nothing - after local council workers whitewashed the piece just four days after it had been finished!

The wall in question was opposite the Jacob's Well pub in Honley, Huddersfield and Reg Senior, its owner, had asked for a mural depicting the Hope Park Pleasure Grounds, a local amusements centre which closed in 1955 but attracted thousands of visitors in its heyday, reports the Huddersfield Daily Examiner.

Accordingly, Gareth Lewis and four colleagues had been working on the wall since May to meet Mr Senior's request but, just days after finishing the wall art to his total satisfaction, Lewis got a call that council workers had obliterated the work.

"I'm gutted that all our time and effort has been wasted," said Lewis.

"It's a private wall and the council was aware of the mural while we were painting it and didn't say anything against it."

Famous wall art pioneer Banksy suffered similar distress earlier this year when one of his works - depicting an iconic scene from hit movie Pulp Fiction and said to be worth a whopping £300,000 - was similarly scrubbed near London's Old Street station.
