Inventive contemporary art programme driving hotel expansion

A cool contemporary art scheme has brought such rapid success to a US hotel that its innovative busines idea is set to expand into a number of other cities across the States. The brainchild of investors and art collectors Steve Wilson and Laura Lee Brown, the existing 21c Museum Hotel is a 91-room hotel complex in the heart of Louisiana, Kentucky, which also features a 9,000 sq ft contemporary art gallery and a number of other art works adorning its walls.
Buoyed by their success in Louisiana, the team behind the hotel have now announced plans to extend the cool contemporary art concept on a nationwide basis, with a 230-room hotel already set for Austin, Texas.
The Austin project will also feature 202 residential units, a top-class restaurant, spa and swimming pool, and is due for completion by 2010.
"Our goal is to blend a love of art, Texas-style comfort and 21st Century technology into a property that is uniquely Austin," commented Mr Wilson.
"The driver here is art, in all its forms - contemporary art by emerging and acclaimed regional and international artists; architecture of the finest calibre; and cuisine by true artisans in the culinary world," he added.
Austin was an obvious pick thanks to its strong contingent of student and young professionals which gives it one of the most eclectic and progressive outlooks of any US city.
