Wall art angel lights up underground exhibition

Published on: 03-Jul-2007
A wall art portrait of the Archangel Gabriel is one of the eerie highlights of a new sound and vision exhibition which will reawaken a lost part of Birmingham city centre.

In the 1960s, a vast collection of tunnels operated below the city centre, with the longest connecting the city's New Street station to the Mailbox, the largest postal sorting office in Europe. When that office relocated to the outskirts of the city a decade ago, the hidden web quickly became forgotten, and now does not feature on any map or guide to the city.

A new work by the Fierce Arts group, however, will enliven the lost labyrinth and see it opened to the public for the first time. The project, entitled Tunnel Vision, will feature a ghoulish soundtrack created by composer Dan Jones as well as some unique wall art courtesy of artist Luke Jerram.

In commemoration of the Archangel, the patron saint of postal workers long since forgotten in the tunnel, Jerram's wall art creation features a series of forgotten boxes and broken packages collected and reflected to form an image of the angel.

Tunnel Vision stretches for more than half a kilometre and the creative pair behind it are running a series of free guided tours at various times over the next fortnight.
