Bottoms up for the future of funky contemporary furniture design

The latest invention of a top young engineer from New Zealand is set to herald a new era for funky contemporary furniture - with products set to come ergonomically designed to fit as comfortably as possible against the human body.Driven by hugely uncomfortable lab chairs, Sarah Cox, 23, started research into how sitting down affects the body as part of her biomedical engineering course at Auckland University last year, reports stuff.co.nz.
Miss Cox studied how the body works while seated by creating a 3D set of virtual buttocks - using information gained from studying the body of an executed US death row prisoner.
The research saw Miss Cox be presented with the prestigious MacDiarmid Young Scientist of the Year award, and her design is also now being used to develop a new range of funky contemporary furniture by an office furniture design company.
"Designers can take this information and decide where to put more cushioning," commented Miss Cox.
"For example, when we look at someone sitting, we can find where there is high stress in the muscles," she added.
