'Art-Idol' searches for contemporary artists

Contemporary art will be the focus of an exciting new Channel 4 programme, with art mogul Charles Saatchi lending his formidable support.

The show's producers have chosen 20 talented young artists to take part and they will be expected to produce works that can be exhibited during the Frieze Art Fair.

Turner Prize winner Antony Gormley is rumoured to be one of the judges for the show and contemporary art specialist Sadie Coles is also going to be involved. The idea is to identify and promote the work of Britain's most exciting young artists, whilst drawing attention to the quality of existing abstract art in the country.

Speaking to the Independent, Ms Coles stressed that she is on the lookout for contemporary art that makes her stop and think.

"I will be looking for something that surprises me, that indicates potential for development and makes me think," she said.

"Homage to other artists is OK. Pastiche or plagiarism is not. There is so much more good contemporary and old art to see in London that it should have a positive effect."

Little is known about the plans that the participating artists have made, but those involved with the show are looking for unique art that will make a genuine impression on the industry. Canvas art will be welcomed, but it also seems certain many of the artists will look to shock with unorthodox efforts.
