Artists who have toiled over canvas wall art portraits have been recognised as part of the BP Portrait Awards, held at the National Portrait Gallery.

First prize in the prestigious awards was presented to Paul Emsley from Bradford-upon-Avon for a large-scale wall art piece of fellow artist Michael Simpson. Oil on canvas, the artwork is striking in its use of dark and light to create depth and contrast.

In second place was David Lawton, who produced an oil on canvas wall art painting of his friend Stephen, and in third position was Johan Andersson's wall art nude portrait of his friend Tamara, in oil on canvas again.

For the artists involved, winning these awards is a real achievement in terms of recognition and prestige. First prize is £24,000 plus a commission from the National Portrait Gallery Trustees.

The Young Artist Award went to Czech artist Hynek Martinec for his acrylic on wooden board wall art depicting his girlfriend Zuzana in almost life-like quality.ADNFCR-1042-ID-18195451-ADNFCR
