New abstract art idea really takes the biscuit

Published on: 19-Jun-2007
A new idea aimed at creating unique new works of abstract art comes with an unusual twist - all the painting is being performed by pups!

Mary Stadelbacher, of Salisbury, Maryland, had just set up a dog-training academy but was struggling to make ends meet at her new canine college, which aimed at teaching dogs to help the disabled, report the Associated Press.

That was when Ms Stadelbacher decided to have a crack at the abstract art market, feeling certain her animals could be just as capable in the creative sector as they would be as carers.

Two years later, and an innovative abstract art collection now adorns the walls of Ms Stadelbacher's thriving Shore Service Dogs academy, with the puppy Pollocks having been immortalised in a range of Christmas cards, and one original even selling recently at auction for $350.

Commenting on her surprise success, Ms Stadelbacher said: "The painting part came because I was thinking, 'Um, what can we do for fundraising?' I love training dogs. It's just a joy. But the fundraising part sucks."

And reflecting on her ambition to one day quit her job as a computer consultant to begin working full-time with her pet painters, she added: "They are so incredibly smart that it blows my mind."
